WLUP 97.9 FM, famously known as The Loop, was a cornerstone of Chicago’s classic rock radio scene from March 14, 1977, until 2018. With its bold and irreverent style, the station became synonymous with rock culture in the city, hosting legendary personalities such as shock-jock duo Steve Dahl and Garry Meier—whose infamous Disco Demolition event in 1979 symbolized the cultural shift away from disco—as well as Johnathan Brandmeier, Bob Stroud, Kevin Matthews, Patty Hayes, Mitch Michaels, and others who helped shape The Loop’s edgy voice.

The station’s playlist spanned the full spectrum of classic rock, including local icons like Cheap Trick, STYX, and REO Speedwagon. Events like Loopfest and the presence of its event representative, “The Loop Girl” Lorelei, added to its cult status.

WLUP’s 41-year run as a classic rock powerhouse came to an end in 2018 when 97.9 FM was rebranded as WCKL and adopted a Christian music format. However, The Loop has since been resurrected and is now available via internet radio.
