Terri Hemmert is a pioneering Chicago radio personality whose remarkable career helped change the role of women in rock radio while making her one of the most beloved and influential voices in the history of Chicago broadcasting. Although born and raised in Piqua, Ohio, Hemmert came to Illinois to attend Elmhurst College, where she studied speech and discovered that radio could become her life’s calling. Inspired by The Beatles and the musical revolution that followed their arrival in America, Hemmert began her professional broadcasting career in 1970 at WGLD in Chicago. Her journey would eventually lead to a remarkable half‑century relationship with WXRT and make her a defining voice of Chicago music.

After a brief stint at WCMF in Rochester, New York, Hemmert returned to Chicago in 1973 and joined WXRT, initially working the overnight shift while also serving as the station’s Public Affairs Director. WXRT was itself undergoing a remarkable transformation, having evolved from a station with classical, jazz and folk programming into a nighttime progressive‑rock experiment beginning in 1972. Hemmert became an essential part of that adventurous new musical environment. Rather than simply announcing records, she brought an extraordinary depth of musical knowledge, curiosity and warmth to the airwaves, helping listeners discover artists and music that traditional Top 40 radio often overlooked.

In 1981, Hemmert made Chicago radio history when she became the city’s first female morning‑drive personality on a rock music station. It was a significant achievement in an industry still overwhelmingly dominated by men. Yet Hemmert’s influence extended well beyond breaking that barrier. Her intelligent, conversational style and genuine passion for music made her a trusted guide for generations of Chicago listeners. She eventually moved to the middays slot in 1992, where she continued to build an extraordinary relationship with her audience. For more than 50 years, her voice, humor, warmth and encyclopedic knowledge of music have been an integral part of Chicago’s cultural landscape.

Hemmert’s love for The Beatles became one of the defining passions of her career. For many years she hosted WXRT’s annual day‑long “Rampant Beatlemania” celebration, and in 2002 she became host of the station’s beloved Sunday‑morning program “Breakfast with the Beatles.” Her broadcasting career has also been marked by a deep commitment to the Chicago community. Hemmert has supported numerous charitable and cultural causes, including the Peace Museum, the AIDS Pastoral Care Network and music‑education initiatives developed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

In 2010, her extraordinary contribution to American broadcasting was recognized with induction into the Radio Hall of Fame. In 2026, Terri Hemmert was inducted into the Illinois Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in the Radio Personality/DJ category, recognizing a career that is inseparable from the story of Chicago rock radio. Her longtime home, WXRT, was itself inducted into the Illinois Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2023, making Hemmert’s individual recognition a fitting continuation of that legacy.
